How Often Should You Get Acupuncture?

One of the most common questions I hear from new clients is: How often should I get acupuncture?

The short answer is: it depends on what you're coming in for, how long you've been experiencing it, and how your body responds to treatment.

Acupuncture is often most beneficial as a series of treatments rather than a one-time session. While some people notice a shift after their first appointment, treatments can build upon one another over time. Typically, we may begin with more consistent visits and gradually space them out as symptoms improve.

At Acupunctury, there is no one-size-fits-all schedule. Your treatment plan is personalized to you, your health goals, and where you are in the process.

How Often Should You Get Acupuncture When You're Starting?

For many concerns, once-weekly acupuncture is a common place to start.

A typical initial treatment plan at Acupunctury may include weekly treatments for approximately 6–8 sessions, depending on what we're working on and how you respond.

During this time, we're looking for patterns. Are your symptoms becoming less intense? Are improvements lasting longer between appointments? Are you sleeping better? Is pain returning less frequently? Are you noticing changes in your cycle, digestion, energy, or stress?

We aren't simply counting treatments — we're paying attention to how your body is responding over time.

What If I Can't Come Every Week?

That's completely okay.

I want acupuncture to be something that realistically fits into your life, not another source of pressure.

While consistency can be helpful when we're actively working on a concern, every other week may be appropriate for some people. Others may come monthly.

I'd much rather create a treatment plan you can realistically maintain than give you a rigid schedule that doesn't work for you.

Does Frequency Depend on What You're Treating?

Yes. How often you receive acupuncture can vary depending on what brings you in.

For a new injury or acute pain, treatments may initially be closer together. Chronic concerns such as recurring neck and shoulder tension, low back pain, headaches, stress, or sleep difficulties may benefit from a consistent series of treatments before gradually spacing appointments out.

For women's health and fertility, timing may also be influenced by the menstrual cycle. Treatments can be adapted throughout different phases of the cycle depending on your individual symptoms and goals.

For general wellness or maintenance, appointments may be spaced farther apart.

This is why I don't believe in giving every patient the exact same acupuncture schedule. Your treatment should meet you where you are.

When Can You Start Spacing Out Treatments?

One of the best indicators is when your improvements begin lasting longer between sessions.

For example, perhaps you initially experience relief from neck tension for a few days after acupuncture. After several treatments, that relief may begin lasting a week or two.

That's useful information.

Rather than automatically keeping you on the same schedule, we can begin extending the time between appointments and see how your body responds.

A treatment plan might look something like:

Weekly → every other week → monthly or as-needed maintenance

The goal isn't to keep you coming in as frequently as possible. It's to find the frequency that provides meaningful support for you.

Do You Need Acupuncture Forever?

Not necessarily.

Some people come to acupuncture for a specific concern, complete a series of treatments, feel significantly better, and return only when something new comes up.

Others enjoy incorporating acupuncture into their ongoing wellness routine and come once or twice a month, seasonally, or whenever they feel they need a reset.

Your needs can also change over time. You may initially come in for pain and later use acupuncture to support stress, sleep, menstrual health, fertility, or overall wellness.

That's one of the things I love about Traditional Chinese Medicine: the treatment evolves with you.

How Do I Know If Acupuncture Is Working?

Progress doesn't always mean a symptom disappears overnight. Instead, we may look for:

  • Symptoms becoming less intense or less frequent

  • Improvements lasting longer between treatments

  • Better sleep or energy

  • Feeling more resilient during periods of stress

  • Changes in digestion

  • Improvements in menstrual or PMS symptoms

  • Needing treatment less frequently over time

These changes help us understand how you're responding and guide what we do next.

Your Acupuncture Treatment Plan at Acupunctury

At Acupunctury in Santa Monica, every new patient begins with a comprehensive initial visit. We'll talk through what brought you in, your health history, lifestyle, sleep, stress, digestion, and other factors relevant to your health.

From there, your acupuncture treatment is tailored to how you're presenting that day. Depending on your needs, complementary modalities such as glass fire cupping, gua sha, or LED light therapy may also be incorporated when appropriate.

At the end of your visit, we'll discuss how frequently I recommend coming in and what we'll be looking for as we reassess your progress. The next day, you will also receive lifestyle and nutrition guidance sent directly to you, including everything we spoke about, with your complete recommended treatment plan.

There is no perfect schedule. We'll work together to find a treatment plan that feels both therapeutic and realistic for your life.

So, How Often Should You Get Acupuncture?
