The menstrual cycle can tell us a lot about overall health. Changes in cycle length, menstrual flow, cramping, mood, sleep, digestion, energy, and ovulation can all provide useful information about what is happening in the body.
For centuries, acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have been used to support women throughout different stages of reproductive health.
Today, many women seek acupuncture as a complementary approach for menstrual symptoms, fertility support, and the transition through perimenopause and menopause.

Why Do Women Seek Acupuncture for Their Menstrual Cycles?
Some of the most common concerns we see include:
Painful periods and menstrual cramps
PMS, including mood changes, bloating, headaches, and breast tenderness
Irregular or absent periods
Heavy or light menstrual flow
Ovulation and fertility support
Stress and sleep disturbances that fluctuate throughout the cycle
Perimenopause and menopause symptoms
In Western medicine, the menstrual cycle is regulated through the interaction of hormones including estrogen, progesterone, FSH, and LH. Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at the cycle through a different lens, considering patterns involving Qi, Blood, Yin, Yang, and organ systems such as the Liver, Kidney, and Spleen.
These TCM patterns are not the same as Western medical diagnoses or laboratory-defined hormonal imbalances. Instead, they provide a framework for creating an individualized treatment.
How Can Acupuncture Help?
Acupuncture treatment is tailored to both the menstrual concern and the person as a whole.
For someone experiencing painful periods, treatment may focus on menstrual discomfort while also addressing associated symptoms such as lower back pain, headaches, digestive changes, or stress. Someone seeking fertility support may receive a different treatment depending on where they are in their menstrual cycle, their symptoms, and whether they are trying naturally or undergoing fertility treatment.
Acupuncture has been studied for several women's health concerns, with some of the strongest supportive evidence relating to symptom management such as menstrual pain. Research for conditions such as PCOS, fertility, and hormonal regulation is still evolving, so acupuncture is best viewed as complementary care rather than a replacement for appropriate medical treatment.
Chinese Herbal Medicine
Herbal medicine is another important part of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Rather than prescribing one herb for one symptom, Chinese medicine traditionally uses combinations of herbs selected according to the individual's presentation.
Common formulas used in women's health may include Xiao Yao San, Jia Wei Xiao Yao San, Wen Jing Tang, and Gui Pi Tang, depending on the patient's TCM diagnosis.
Herbal formulas should always be individualized. This is especially important for anyone who is pregnant, trying to conceive, undergoing fertility treatment, or taking prescription medications.
Supplements, Nutrition & Lifestyle
Treatment may also include guidance outside of the acupuncture room.
Depending on the individual, this can include discussing nutrients such as magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, calcium, iron, or inositol, when appropriate. Supplements should be selected based on the person's diet, symptoms, medications, health history, and, when relevant, laboratory results.
Nutrition recommendations generally focus on supporting overall health rather than following a restrictive "hormone-balancing" diet. Adequate protein, healthy fats, fiber-rich carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, and foods rich in iron and other essential nutrients can all play a role.
We may also discuss sleep, stress management, movement, exercise, heat for menstrual cramps, and menstrual-cycle or ovulation tracking.
An Individualized Approach to Women’s Health
No two menstrual cycles—or women—are exactly alike.
One person may come in for painful periods and also struggle with migraines and digestive symptoms. Another may be trying to conceive and want additional support throughout her cycle. Someone entering perimenopause may be experiencing changing periods alongside hot flashes, sleep disturbances, or anxiety.
Traditional Chinese Medicine looks at these symptoms together rather than treating the menstrual cycle in isolation.
Whether you're navigating painful periods, PMS, fertility, changing cycles, or the transition into menopause, acupuncture can be one part of a comprehensive approach to supporting your health throughout every stage of life.
