Cosmetic acupuncture is often described as a natural way to support the skin - but what makes it so unique is that it’s never just about the face.

Each treatment is thoughtfully layered, working with your body as a whole system. If you’re exploring cosmetic acupuncture in Santa Monica or are simply curious about how facial acupuncture works, this guide walks you through every phase of the Facial Rejuvenation experience at Acupunctury, so you know exactly what to expect.
Intake: Understanding You First
Every cosmetic acupuncture treatment begins with an in-depth conversation.
We go through your medical history, skin concerns, lifestyle, hormone patterns, digestion, sleep, stress, and emotional patterns - anything that may be influencing how your body and skin are functioning.
This is your time to ask questions, share what you’ve been noticing, or simply arrive.
Tongue & Pulse Diagnosis: Looking Beneath the Surface
Next, I assess your tongue and pulse - two of the primary diagnostic tools in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
This gives insight into internal patterns such as:
circulation quality
hydration and fluid balance
digestive strength
nervous system tone
Rather than focusing only on surface-level concerns, this step helps guide a treatment that supports the root of what’s showing up in the skin.
Here is also where we can before photos, in order to track your progress.
Body Acupuncture: Setting the Foundation
Before we work on the face, we begin with body acupuncture - and this is intentional.
The skin reflects what’s happening internally. Circulation, inflammation, muscle tension, hormonal signaling, and nervous system regulation all influence how the skin looks and functions.
Body acupuncture helps:
increase and regulate circulation
calm the nervous system
reduce underlying inflammation
support hormonal balance
release areas of chronic tension
By starting here, we create the internal conditions that allow facial acupuncture to be more effective and longer-lasting.
Cosmetic Acupuncture: Precise, Local Support
Once the body is supported, we move to the face.
Cosmetic acupuncture (also known as facial acupuncture) uses very fine, sterile needles placed in specific areas of the face to:
stimulate local circulation
support collagen and elastin activity
soften muscle tension patterns
improve overall skin function
During this portion, I typically pause conversation so I can focus on precision needling - ensuring both safety and the most refined, intentional placement.
Rest + Celluma LED Light Therapy
Once the needles are in place, you’ll rest with LED light therapy.
Celluma uses a combination of red, near-infrared, and blue light (non-thermal, no UV), each working in a slightly different way to support the skin:
red and near-infrared light support cellular activity, circulation, and collagen production
blue light helps target acne-causing bacteria and support clearer skin
This phase enhances the effects of the treatment while giving your body time to fully settle. It’s a quiet, restorative portion of the session - many people drift into a deeply relaxed, almost meditative state, some even fall asleep.
Needle Removal + Integration
After your rest period, the LED light is removed and the facial needles are gently taken out. At this point, your body has already begun to shift - circulation is increased, muscles are softer, and the nervous system is more regulated. This is where the treatment begins to integrate.
Facial Cupping & Gua Sha: Lifting, Sculpting, and Flow
We finish with facial cupping and gua sha, extending beyond the face to include the chest (décolleté), neck, and scalp.
This is intentional - tension and stagnation don’t begin at the face, so we don’t treat the face in isolation.
These techniques help:
encourage lymphatic movement (reducing puffiness and stagnation)
release muscle tension in the jaw, neck, and forehead
improve fascial glide and elasticity
enhance circulation and oxygen delivery to the skin
Working from the chest upward allows everything to move more freely and cohesively.
A Personalized, Whole-Body Approach to Skin Health
No two cosmetic acupuncture treatments are exactly the same.
Each step - from body acupuncture to facial acupuncture to cupping and gua sha - is thoughtfully tailored to what your body needs that day, while still supporting your overall treatment plan.
Cosmetic acupuncture isn’t about forcing change. It's about supporting the systems that allow change to happen naturally. Over time, this approach doesn’t just influence how your skin looks - it supports how your skin functions.
